Ingredients

4 skinless chicken thighs, or more to taste
½ lemon, cut into wedges
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, coarsely chopped
2 large cloves garlic, minced
½ cup dry white wine
1 (14 ounce) can chopped tomatoes in juice
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground allspice
1 pinch white sugar
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Rub chicken pieces with lemon. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or lidded skillet. Add onion and garlic, cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides, 5 to 10 minutes.

  2. Pour wine over the chicken. Add tomatoes with their juice, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, sugar, salt, and pepper, bring to a boil. Cover the Dutch oven and simmer until chicken is tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
