2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons baking soda
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
3 drops red food coloring

Directions

  1. Mix ingredients in the order given. Divide dough and add enough red food coloring for desired shades of pink or red.

  2. Refrigerate dough for 40 to 60 minutes.

  3. Roll and cut out with heart cutters. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 11 minutes. Do not overbake.

Recipe Note

These make a pretty plate of Valentine cookies if you use different sized cutters and tint the dough in a variety of pink to red shades.
